A quelques semaines de la sortie de Fire Upon Your Lands, le 15è album des suédois de Unleashed, nous avons eu l’opportunité de nous entretenir avec Johnny, chanteur, bassiste et fondateur du groupe.
Vous allez sortir un nouvel album intitulé « Fire Upon Your Lands ». Pouvez-vous nous en dire plus ?
Bien sûr, il s’agit de notre 15ème album en il me semble 37 ans ou quelque part par là. Cet album s’inscrit dans la même veine que nos précédents. Le but d’Unleashed est d’avoir un son reconnaissable et qui ne s’éloigne pas trop de nos racines. Nous essayons de produire un death metal dynamique et catchy dont l’on se souvient. Et nous avons aussi ce fil conducteur de « The World of Odalheim » qui est un livre que j’ai écrit il y a quelques années. Il s’agit de notre 6è album qui suit cette trame.
Vous êtes restés fidèles à vos racines musicales depuis longtemps, depuis plus de 30 ans comme tu le disais à l’instant. Quel est, selon vous, le secret de cette constance artistique ?
Je pense que la raison pour laquelle nous faisons ça depuis si longtemps sans interruption est clairement parce qu’au sein du groupe nous sommes de très bons amis. C’est crucial, si tu n’es pas avant tout des amis, le groupe ne peut pas tenir. Et deuxièmement je dirais que l’on s’entraide tous. Quand tu es un groupe de death metal ou même de heavy metal, il y a tellement de choses à faire ou à penser au sein du groupe… C’est important de pouvoir partager tout cela pour rester un groupe et pas un projet solo. Je rajouterai également que nous nous sommes mis d’accord très tôt dans Unleashed que nous serions un groupe de death metal. C’est important car ainsi la direction est fixée d’emblée. Si tu veux jouer autre chose, c’est absolument ok, mais dans un autre groupe qu’Unleashed. Tout pendant que nous nous appelons Unleashed, nous faisons du death metal. Je pense que c’est important car si tu n’as pas ces racines sur lesquelles t’accrocher, tu ne peux pas aller dans la bonne direction. Je pense que c’est ce qui fait que l’on s’en est sorti plutôt bien pendant toutes ces années.
Vous avez récemment dit quelque chose au sujet de votre amitié qui m’a vraiment marqué: vous n’avez pas besoin de vous parler pour vous comprendre et pouvez simplement vous envoyer de la musique sans effort. Comment entretenez vous cette cohésion et cette alchimie après tant d’années, alors que tant de groupes se séparent ou changent de membres plus vite que de cordes ?
Lorsque l’on fait ça, on sait quasiment à l’avance ce que les autres vont penser, tu sais si Fredrik m’envoie 4 chansons, il sait que je vais aimer les 4. Il n’a pas besoin de m’en envoyer 15 pour que j’en choisisse 5 car nous faisons cela depuis très longtemps. C’est la même chose pour les paroles. Je créé des paroles qui sont dans leurs goûts, je sais ce qu’ils aiment et ce qu’ils aiment moins, ce serait pour moi stupide de passer des heures à travailler sur quelque chose et prendre le risque de leur envoyer quelque chose que je ne suis pas sûr qu’ils aimeront. C’est bien sûr possible grâce au fait que nous jouons ensemble depuis si longtemps. Nous avons fait des festivals, des tournées, de nombreux albums ensemble depuis beaucoup beaucoup d’années… Nous avons maintenant une formule qui fonctionne très bien.
Pour revenir à « Fire Upon Your Lands », l’album est incroyable et s’inscrit clairement dans la continuité de vos précédentes productions. L’histoire marche dans les pas de vos précédentes productions. En quelques phrases, comment résumeriez vous cette histoire pour quelqu’un qui voudrait plonger dans cet album sans connaître toute votre discographie ?
En fait l’idée c’est que j’ai écrit mon propre livre avec un ami il y a pas mal d’années, intitulé « The World of Odalheim », il n’a jamais été publié ni fini. Nous avons donc décidé de transformer les chapitres en chansons. Parfois un chapitre peut se transformer en deux chansons, pas forcément une seule. L’histoire derrière cela concerne les guerriers de Midgard, ils se battent pour leur mode de vie littéralement contre l’ennemi « White Christ ». C’est ce que nous racontons depuis plusieurs albums, il me semble 6 d’affilé. Bien sûr nos paroles sont axées sur les traditions vikings, mais ce, bien même avant que nous ne démarrions cette histoire. Ce n’est pas si étrange au final pour un groupe comme Unleashed de raconter ce type d’histoire car nous avons toujours partagé des paroles au sujet des traditions vikings, du passé, du présent et du futur. Ce nouvel album ne déroge pas à la règle et je pense que n’importe quelle personne qui aime ces sujets appréciera nos paroles et l’histoire que nous contons.
Nous pouvons donc attendre la suite de cette histoire dans d’autres albums?
Oui ! Je ne sais honnêtement pas si il y aura deux ou quatre albums, Je ne suis pas sûr. Je sais comment l’histoire se termine, mais c’est étrange car parfois tu peux avoir un chapitre qui donne trois chansons, et parfois tu peux avoir un chapitre qui n’aura aucune chanson et je dois juste les ignorer car sur l’instant ils ne collent pas avec l’album ou les autres chansons. Donc je ne sais pas vraiment, mais il y aura peut-être deux ou trois albums, il faudra voir (rires) !
Il faudra écouter pour le savoir !
Oui tout à fait, mais tu sais lorsque l’on a commencé nous ne savions même pas si les gens allaient aimer, on s’est dit ok, faisons un album et voyons ! Et puis il y a eu deux albums, puis trois,… Et maintenant 6 ! Habituellement quand nous faisons un album nous produisons dix ou douze chansons, elles tournent toutes autour d’un même sujet, mais elles ne racontent pas d’histoire à proprement parlé alors nous ne pouvions pas savoir si le public allait aimer, mais cela fonctionne !
Vous avez entamé une tournée il y a quelques semaines et vous avez récemment joué au Hellfest. Avez-vous eu l’occasion de jouer des morceaux du nouvel album ?
Nous n’avons pas testé nos nouveaux morceaux, cela nous semblait trop tôt. Mais sur les prochaines dates en août nous allons en jouer quelques uns et nous verrons ce que les gens en pensent. Je suis impatient de le savoir mais les premières vidéos lyriques ont été dévoilées et « War Comes Again » par exemple a reçu un excellent accueil. Nous verrons ce que les gens en pensent en live. Nous nous réunissons ce weekend chez Tomas et nous allons jouer ensemble ces nouveaux morceaux pour préparer nos nouvelles setlist !
Même après plus de 30 ans, 15 albums et d’innombrables concerts, vous avez encore parfois des doutes en écrivant certains morceaux. Comment gérez-vous ces moments d’incertitude ? Et pensez-vous qu’ils sont essentiels à l’authenticité du processus créatif ?
Je pense que oui . S’il n’y a pas d’autocritique alors l’album sera mauvais, j’en suis persuadé. A chaque fois que nous faisons une nouvelle chanson, elle doit absolument s’intégrer dans l’album premièrement, et deuxièmement elle doit être suffisamment solide, tu dois être critique avec toi même car personne d’autre ne l’a encore entendue ! Nous ne sommes que quatre mecs, nous devons être critiques et toujours chercher ce que l’on pourrait faire de mieux ou comment améliorer. Et nous le faisons ! Mais encore une fois, nous faisons cela depuis si longtemps que l’on sait ce que l’on va en penser. Nous faisons toujours plus de morceaux que ce que nous mettons sur les albums, car il y a toujours quelques chansons qui ne sont pas assez solides, mais je ne dis pas que nous en faisons vingt cinq pour en garder onze, c’est plutôt treize pour réduire à onze. Mais nous essayons toujours de garder cette liberté de paroles envers chacun de manière à pouvoir produire quelque chose d’aussi bon que nous en sommes capables.
Pour finir, à quoi les fans peuvent-ils s’attendre pour le futur de Unleashed, et que pouvons-nous vous souhaiter ?
Je pense bien évidemment que vous pouvez vous attendre à nous voir jouer autant que possible ce nouvel album, nous avons une bonne partie de l’année de bookée mais nous travaillons sur 2026 également. Nous allons faire le plus de concerts possible. Nous ne faisons plus de tournées de 7 jours (rires) mais nous essayons de faire le plus de dates et de festivals que nous pouvons . Nous voulons avoir envie du prochain concert. Il y aura également encore une vidéo lyrique avant la sortie de l’album qui aura lieu le 15 (août). Et pour ce que l’on pourrait nous souhaiter, et bien que l’on continue et que l’on puisse tourner au maximum l’année prochaine !

As they’re about to release « Fire Upon Your Lands, their 15th album, we had the opportunity to talk with Johnny, singer, bassist and fondator of swedish death metal band Unleashed.
You’re releasing a new album titled « Fire Upon Your Lands. » Can you tell us more about it?
Of course. This is our 15th album in—I believe—37 years, or somewhere around that. This album follows the same path as our previous ones. The goal of Unleashed is to have a recognizable sound that doesn’t stray too far from our roots. We try to produce dynamic and catchy death metal that stays with you. And we also have the ongoing storyline of « The World of Odalheim » , which is a book I wrote a few years ago. This is actually our sixth album based on that story.
You’ve remained true to your musical roots for a long time—over 30 years, as you just mentioned. What do you think is the secret to this artistic consistency?
I think the reason we’ve been doing this for so long without any real breaks is clearly because we’re very good friends within the band. That’s crucial—if you’re not friends first, the band can’t last. And secondly, we support each other. In a death metal or even heavy metal band, there are so many things to do or think about… it’s important to be able to share all that so the band stays a band and doesn’t become a solo project. I’d also add that we agreed very early on that Unleashed would be a death metal band. That’s important because it sets the direction from the beginning. If you want to play something else, that’s totally fine—but in another band, not Unleashed. As long as we’re called Unleashed, we play death metal. That’s important because without those roots to hold on to, you can’t move forward in the right direction. I think that’s what’s helped us do so well all these years.
You recently said something about your friendship that really struck me: that you don’t need to talk to understand each other and can just send music effortlessly. How do you maintain that chemistry after so many years, while so many other bands fall apart or change members more often than guitar strings?
When we do that, we pretty much know in advance what the others are going to think. You know, if Fredrik sends me four songs, he knows I’ll like all four. He doesn’t need to send me 15 so I can pick five, because we’ve been doing this for such a long time. It’s the same with the lyrics. I write lyrics that I know are in their taste—I know what they like and what they don’t. It would be stupid for me to spend hours working on something and risk sending them something I’m not sure they’ll like. That’s only possible because we’ve been playing together for so long. We’ve done festivals, tours, so many albums over the years… We’ve now got a formula that works really well.
Back to Fire Upon Your Lands, the album is incredible and clearly continues in the vein of your previous work. The story follows the thread of past albums. In just a few lines, how would you summarize the story for someone wanting to dive into this album without knowing your whole discography?
The idea is that I wrote my own book with a friend quite a few years ago, titled « The World of Odalheim »—it was never published or finished. So we decided to turn the chapters into songs. Sometimes a chapter turns into two songs, not necessarily just one. The story revolves around the warriors of Midgard, who are literally fighting for their way of life against the enemy « White Christ. » That’s what we’ve been telling over the past several albums—I believe this is the sixth in a row. Of course, our lyrics have always been focused on Viking traditions, even before we started this storyline. So it’s not all that strange for a band like Unleashed to tell this kind of story. We’ve always written about Viking traditions, the past, the present, and the future. This new album is no different, and I think anyone who enjoys these themes will appreciate our lyrics and the story we’re telling.
So we can expect the continuation of this story in future albums?
Yes! Honestly, I don’t know if there will be two or four more albums—I’m not sure. I know how the story ends, but it’s strange because sometimes one chapter gives you three songs, and other times there’s a chapter that doesn’t fit and I just have to skip it because at that moment it doesn’t work with the album or the other tracks. So I don’t really know—but maybe two or three more albums. We’ll see! (laughs)
We’ll have to listen to find out!
Exactly! You know, when we started, we didn’t even know if people would like it—we just said, “OK, let’s do one album and see.” Then came a second, then a third… and now six! Usually when we make an album, we write ten or twelve songs, all centered around a single topic, but they don’t tell a continuous story. So we really didn’t know if people would enjoy it. But it’s working!
You started a tour a few weeks ago and recently played at Hellfest. Did you get the chance to play any songs from the new album yet?
We haven’t tested out the new songs yet—it felt too early. But for the upcoming shows in August, we’re going to play a few and see how people react. I’m really looking forward to seeing that. The first lyric videos have already been released, and War Comes Again, for example, got a great reception. We’ll see how it goes live. We’re meeting up this weekend at Tomas’s place and we’ll rehearse the new songs together to prepare the new setlists!
Even after more than 30 years, 15 albums, and countless shows, you still have doubts when writing some songs. How do you deal with those moments of uncertainty? Do you think they’re essential to keeping the creative process authentic?
I think so, yes. If there’s no self-criticism, the album will be bad—I’m convinced of that. Every time we write a new song, it absolutely has to fit the album first of all, and secondly, it has to be strong enough. You have to be critical of yourself because no one else has heard it yet! It’s just the four of us—we have to be self-critical and always look for ways to improve. And we do! But again, we’ve been doing this for so long that we know what we’ll think of the material. We always write more songs than we include on the album because there are always a few that aren’t strong enough. But I’m not saying we write twenty-five to keep eleven—it’s more like thirteen that we trim down to eleven. We always try to keep that freedom to speak openly with each other so we can create the best material we’re capable of.
Finally, what can fans expect in the future from Unleashed, and what can we wish you?
Well, you can definitely expect us to play this new album live as much as possible. We’ve got a good part of the year already booked, and we’re working on 2026 as well. We want to play as many shows as we can. We don’t do 7-day tours anymore (laughs), but we try to do as many gigs and festivals as possible. We want to want the next show. There’ll also be another lyric video before the album is released on August 15. And for what you can wish us—just that we keep going and that we can tour as much as possible next year!
